Basketball Recap: Bishop Gets Big Victory over Higher-Ranked La Vernia

After losing to La Vernia the last time they met, Bishop decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Bishop Badgers walked away with a 68-59 victory over the La Vernia Bears on Friday. The win was all the more spectacular given the Badgers' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 946th, while the Bears are ranked 270th).

Bishop had a senior duo take command as James Garcia almost dropped a double-double on 24 points and nine boards and Kristian Ramos dropped a double-double on 24 points and 15 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Garcia has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Miguel Valdez, who posted ten points.

Bishop smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in three consecutive matchups.

Bishop's victory bumped their record up to 7-8. As for La Vernia, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 11-8.

Bishop and Needville will face off at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Bishop has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. La Vernia will take on Pearsall in a holiday battle at at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
