Basketball Recap: Lejeune Devil Pups vs. Southside Seahawks
The Lejeune Devil Pups's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their ninth straight loss. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 63-38 walloping at the hands of Southside. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Lejeune in their matchups with the Seahawks: they've now lost five in a row.
Loss or not, Lejeune got some senior leadership from Shyanne Bryant and Abigail Gonzales. Bryant almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine steals, while Gonzales. scored 14 points along with five steals and two blocks. That was a full 36.8% of Lejeune's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Scarlett McLean was another key contributor, scoring three points along with five steals and two blocks.
Lejeune struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Southside posted 11 assists.
Southside's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from I'Kiriyah Minor, who scored 21 points along with five rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Minor has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Tamya Smith, who scored 18 points along with five assists and two steals.
Lejeune's defeat was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-11. As for Southside, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-5.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Lejeune won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Trojans at 5:00 p.m. on January 26th. Jones has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Southside, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Hurricanes at 6:00 p.m. on January 26th. Hopefully Pamlico County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 last Thursday.
