Softball Recap: Lake Central Extends Winning Streak to Five

Lake Central came tearing into Wednesday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They never let the Merrillville Pirates get on the board and left with an 11-0 victory. Considering the Indians have won 16 matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Lake Central got a great performance from Jada Lewis as she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts Lewis has posted over her last ten contests.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Lexi Iwema, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted over her last 13 games. MaKayla Van Vossen was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Lake Central always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .846. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Merrillville only posted an OBP of .316.

Lake Central's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 24-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for Merrillville, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 12 of their last 13 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-21 record this season.

Lake Central will look to defend their home field on Monday against Marist at 4:30 p.m. As for Merrillville, they will head out to take on Lake Station Edison at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
