Basketball Recap: Boyd County Takes a Loss

Boyd County suffered their closest defeat since December 30, 2023 on Sunday. They fell just short of the Newport Wildcats by a score of 62-60.

Newport's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Griffin Starks led the charge by dropping a double-double on 17 points and 12 boards. Starks is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down nine or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Amontae Lowe, who went 7 of 16 en route to 16 points along with six assists and five boards.

Boyd County has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.8 points per game. As for Newport, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-6.

Boyd County and Newport should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings. Boyd County (ranked 85th) will meet Bath County (ranked 232nd) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Newport (ranked 55th) will meet Woodward (ranked 583rd) at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
