Football Recap: Costa Mesa Starts Season with Win Against Magnolia

Costa Mesa gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Magnolia Sentinels 56-0. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Mustangs just coasted through the last quarter.

Gavin Garza had a dynamite game, rushing for 151 yards and four scores on only ten carries. His longest rush was for an impressive 53 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Another player making a difference was Andrew Waiss, who rushed for 52 yards and one TD.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Costa Mesa was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 238 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 185 rushing yards in six consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Special teams also played a big role in the game for Costa Mesa, adding 14 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Rex Tompkins, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Looking ahead, Costa Mesa will square off against Estancia at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Magnolia, they will take on Compton Early College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
