Basketball Recap: Rincon/University Piles Up the Points Against Tucson High Magnet School

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Rincon/University's strategy against Tucson High Magnet School on Tuesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Rincon/University Rangers blew the Tucson High Magnet School Badgers out of the water with a 63-29 final score. The Rangers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matchups by 22 points or more this season.

Rincon/University found their leader in sophomore Daphne Safo, who dropped a double-double with 20 points and ten boards. Safo is becoming a predictor of Rincon/University's success: when she posts at least eight rebounds the team is 15-2 (and 3-5 when she doesn't). Emily Martinez was another key player, putting up 13 points and three steals.

Rincon/University smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in six consecutive games.

Destiney Brown and Carice Contreras certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Brown almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 11 boards, while Contreras posted nine points. Brown is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in each of the last five games she's played.

Rincon/University is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.3 points over those games. As for Tucson High Magnet School, they now have a losing record of 11-12.

Rincon/University wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 56-45 loss against Sunnyside on the 7th. As for Tucson High Magnet School, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 69-39 defeat against Salpointe Catholic on the 6th.
