Baseball Recap: Lawton Triumphs

While Lawton's victory against Southeast wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Wolverines narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Spartans 9-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolverines have posted since March 4, 2024.

Kaleb Plata tossed a big game, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off two hits. Lawton is 2-1 when Plata allows one or fewer earned runs, but 2-19 otherwise.

At the plate, Nathan Hawzipta was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted over his last seven matchups. The team also got some help courtesy of Corbyn Swift, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.

Lawton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Southeast only posted a batting average of .120.

The win made it two in a row for Lawton and bumps their season record up to 4-20. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs over those games. As for Southeast, they dropped their record down to 1-14 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Coming up, Lawton will face off against Fletcher at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Southeast, they will challenge Capitol Hill at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
