Basketball Game Preview: Montgomery Central Timberwolves vs. Union Pines Vikings

Montgomery Central is 1-9 against Union Pines since December of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Timberwolves will head out to challenge the Vikings at 6:00 p.m. Montgomery Central has given up an average of 67.1 points per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Montgomery Central is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against High Point Central last Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Timberwolves took a blow against the Bison, falling 77-43. While losing is never fun, the Timberwolves can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 493rd, while the Bison are ranked 105th).

Despite their defeat, Montgomery Central saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Zach Stancil, who posted 12 points, was perhaps the best of all. Stancil has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Christopher Curtis, who scored six points and seven boards.

Union Pines not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since December 26, 2024 (when they won 80-26). They were the clear victors by a 64-41 margin over South Johnston. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Vikings.

Union Pines picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 3-5. As for Montgomery Central, their loss dropped their record down to 1-6.

Montgomery Central came up short against Union Pines when the teams last played on December 4th, falling 75-63. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of the Vikings' Kingsley Donaldson, who dropped a double-double with 36 points and 20 rebounds.
