Basketball Recap: Friday's Win Is Mt. Vernon's Sixth in Last Seven Outings

Mt. Vernon won the last time they faced Marion, and Luke Ertel did his part to make sure it happened again. The Mt. Vernon Marauders enjoyed a cozy 73-56 win over the Marion Giants on Friday thanks in part to Ertel, who went 6-for-7 from beyond the arc to rack up 34 points along with seven boards and five assists. Those 34 points gave him a new career-high.

The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Davis, who went 8-for-10 en route to 16 points and five rebounds. He is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 45% in the last ten games he's played.

Marion's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tim Jones, who posted 17 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. Another player making a difference was Kobe Johnson, who put up six points along with seven rebounds and four steals.

Mt. Vernon is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.9 points over those games. Marion's defeat dropped their record down to 9-9.

Mt. Vernon wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 67-43 victory against Southport on the 15th. As for Marion, they will face off against Lebanon at 7:30 p.m. on February 21st. One thing working in Marion's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five matches.
