5A Region 3 recap Oct. 16, 2012

Jordan's Austin Kafentzis rumbled for the longest rushing play in 5A Region 3 this season in his game against Brighton last week. Kafentzis scampered for 75 yards on the play and finished with 203 on the day as his team beat the Bengals.

Cottonwood made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,499 from 2,711. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 41-14 victory over Copper Hills last week.

Alta's dynamic duo of Chipper Lucero and Ammon Barker proved tough for West Jordan to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Lucero threw for 316 yards and four touchdowns and Barker had 142 yards receiving. Harrison Handley helped Alta's passing attack out by catching six balls for 121 yards.

The Hawks' Lucero and Barker have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Lucero has thrown for 2512 yards this season, while Barker, a 6-foot-4 receiver, has 43 catches for 814 yards. Kafentzis from Jordan leads the league in rushing with 1415 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Jaguars take on Eric Kjar's team. As it stands, West Jordan is in fifth, while the Beetdiggers are in first.
