Basketball Recap: Portal Starts Season with Win Against New Hampstead

Portal had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They walked away with a 60-50 victory over the New Hampstead Phoenix on Tuesday. This was payback for the Panthers, who suffered a 72-63 loss the last time these two teams met.

KJ Hunter went supernova, dropping a double-double with 16 points and 20 boards. Those 20 rebounds gave him a new career-high. Joshua Coleman was another key player, shooting 55% from the field on his way to 15 points and eight boards.

Portal smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive games dating back to last season.

New Hampstead's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Coming up, Portal is taking a road trip to square off against Montgomery County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for New Hampstead, they will host Effingham County at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
