Softball Recap: Ovid-Elsie Sets Scoring Season-High Against Mt. Morris

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Ovid-Elsie). They put the hurt on the Mt. Morris Panthers with a sharp 18-6 victory on Thursday. The win continues a trend for the Marauders in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won seven in a row.

Mercades Grieder was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off nine hits (and not a single walk). Those ten strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Haley McClung, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one double. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kathryn Thornton, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Ovid-Elsie kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Ovid-Elsie's victory bumped their record up to 3-4. As for Mt. Morris, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Ovid-Elsie will host Birch Run at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Mt. Morris, they will look to defend their home field on Monday against Durand at 4:00 p.m. The Railroaders have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.86 runs per game on average), something the Panthers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
