Baseball Game Preview: Bourgade Catholic Golden Eagles vs. Northwest Christian Crusaders

Bourgade Catholic is 0-9 against Northwest Christian since April of 2015 but things could change on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles will venture away from home to square off against the Crusaders at 3:45 p.m. Northwest Christian took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Bourgade Catholic, who comes in off a win.

Bourgade Catholic took a 17-run defeat the last time they faced off against Payson, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Golden Eagles sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Longhorns on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Golden Eagles have posted since March 14, 2024.

Alexander Guzak was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He tossed six innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. He is becoming a predictor of Bourgade Catholic's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-12 when he doesn't).

Guzak wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Tyler Preach, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI. AJ Diaz also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, Northwest Christian fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Gilbert Christian on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Knights by a score of 8-6. The Crusaders' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Northwest Christian's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 14-6. As for Bourgade Catholic, their victory was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-7 and their overall record up to 4-12.

Bourgade Catholic might still be hurting after the 12-2 loss they got from Northwest Christian when the teams last played back in March. Can the Golden Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
