Basketball Recap: La Veta Comes Up Short

After flying high against Walsenburg last Tuesday, La Veta came back down to earth. The La Veta Redhawks came up short against the Kim/Branson Mustangs on Saturday, falling 63-40. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Redhawks have suffered against the Mustangs since February 20, 2021.

Despite the loss, La Veta still got an impressive performance from Aspen Autry, who went 11 of 20 on her way to 24 points and five steals. That was a full 60% of La Veta's points, marking the third time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Marianna De La Cruz, who went 5 for 10 en route to 12 points.

La Veta's defeat dropped their record down to 7-4. As for Kim/Branson, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. La Veta has already played their next match (against Primero), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Kim/Branson is taking a road trip to face off against Sierra Grande at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Kim/Branson's defense has only allowed 24.1 points per game this season, so Sierra Grande's offense will have their work cut out for them.
