Preview: Williamston Hornets vs. Goodrich Martians
Williamston is 1-0 against Goodrich since October of 2018, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Williamston Hornets will be playing in front of their home fans against the Goodrich Martians at 7:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the pair posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Williamston had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17.7 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They strolled past Sparta with points to spare, taking the game 33-17. Given Williamston's advantage in MaxPreps' Michigan football rankings (they are ranked 100th, while Sparta is ranked 211th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Goodrich took their match at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 42-7 win over Linden. The result was nothing new for Goodrich, who have now won four games by 35 points or more so far this season.
Goodrich's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Max Macklem, who picked up 147 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Macklem was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 65 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Easton Phipps, who threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 passes.
Williamston's victory was their fifth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 6-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 43.2 points per game. Goodrich has been no stranger to the win column this season, as they've started out with wins in seven of their first eight matchups, giving them a 7-1 record.
Williamston beat Goodrich 35-28 when the teams last played back in October of 2018. Will Williamston repeat their success, or does Goodrich have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
