Softball Recap: Yreka Comes Up Short

Yreka extended their losing streak to four on Tuesday, dropping them down to 11-8. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the West Valley Eagles. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Miners of the 13-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2025.

Trinity Spencer was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Yreka saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Macey Howell, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.

As for West Valley, they pushed their record up to 14-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games.

On West Valley's side, Aubree Wertz made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. That's the most strikeouts Wertz has posted since back in April of 2025. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Yreka has already played their next contest, a 1-0 defeat against Central Valley on the 17th. As for West Valley, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, an 8-7 win against Lassen on the 17th.
