Football Recap: Nathan Mecham's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Layton over Copper Hills

Layton was the 24-20 winner over Copper Hills when they last played one another back in October of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Lancers took a 29-22 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Grizzlies on Friday. While the Lancers had to settle for second, they closed the game well in the third quarter, where they outscored the Grizzlies 13-8.

Layton's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nathan Mecham, who picked up 129 receiving yards and two scores. Another passer making a difference was Lincoln Wilcox, who threw for 235 yards and one touchdown.

Copper Hills' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ethan Hill, who rushed for 70 yards and one TD on only six carries, and also threw for 152 yards and one touchdown. Ryu Duy was another key player, rushing for 89 yards and a pair of scores.

Layton's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Copper Hills, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-1.

Looking ahead, Layton will challenge American Fork at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Copper Hills, they will square off against Mountain Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Grizzlies' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
