Baseball Recap: Calhoun Academy's Win on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Seven

Calhoun Academy came tearing into Friday's contest with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by a 17-2 margin over the Thomas Sumter Academy Generals. The Cavaliers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matches by six runs or more this season.

Cullen Sightler and Chase Strickland made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Sightler tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Strickland struck out eight batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Sightler has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Sightler scored two runs while going 4-for-5, while Strickland scored four runs while going 3-for-3. Those four runs gave Strickland a new career-high.

In other batting news, Will Strock and Asher Ficek did most of the damage at the plate: Strock went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and three RBI, while Ficek scored a run while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave Ficek a new career-high in RBI (three). Another player making a difference was Turner Hood, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Calhoun Academy pushed their record up to 9-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Thomas Sumter Academy, they are on a ten-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Coming up, Calhoun Academy will challenge Sidwell Friends at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Sidwell Friends' pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Calhoun Academy's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Thomas Sumter Academy, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Orangeburg Prep at 6:00 p.m. on the 31st.
