Softball Game Preview: Herkimer Magicians vs. Mt. Markham Mustangs

The Herkimer Magicians will head out on the road to take on the Mt. Markham Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Herkimer is coming into the contest hot, having won their last five games.

Herkimer came out on top against Proctor on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run fifth inning. The Magicians skirted past the Raiders 6-5.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mt. Markham). They came out on top against Cooperstown by a score of 13-8 on Monday. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Redskins recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

Abby Schoonover made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out ten over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. That run was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Bella Gifford was incredible, going 4-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles. She also snagged a stolen base, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Leah Eck, who went 3-for-5 with three runs and one double.

Mt. Markham kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

The win got Mt. Markham back to even at 5-5-1. As for Herkimer, their record is now 8-4.

Herkimer beat Mt. Markham 7-2 when the teams last played two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Magicians since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
