5A District 16 recap October 22, 2013
Cardinal Gibbons added to the longest winning streak in 5A District 16 this week by beating Jackson, 31-30. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Chiefs.
Key West fell to American Heritage 48-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. Mekhi Sargent was a bright spot for the Conchs, as he ran for 98 yards in the loss.
The Patriots' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Torrance Gibson threw for 113 and 2 touchdowns and Isaiah McKenzie had 47 yards receiving. On the ground Sony Michel chipped in 103 yards. Dallas Perez helped American Heritage's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 21 yards.
Carter Jacobs made the biggest impact on defense this week as American Heritage topped Key West. The 6-foot-1 strong safety pulled down 1 interception.
Michel was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 7 carries, he ran for 103 yards as Mike Rumph's team defeated John Hughes' team. Teammate Gibson added to the ground attack by rushing for 91 yards.
American Heritage's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Patriots feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Gibson has thrown for 726 yards and 9 touchdowns this season, while McKenzie has 17 catches for 355 yards.
Cardinal Gibbons and the Generals played the most contested game in the league this week, with Cardinal Gibbons eventually emerging with a 31-30 victory.
