Football Preview: Saranac Spartans vs. Peru Nighthawks
The Saranac Spartans will head out on the road to challenge the Peru Nighthawks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Saranac comes in on five and Peru on seven.
Saranac barely beat Saranac Lake the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Spartans claimed a resounding 40-0 win over the Red Storm. Considering the Spartans have won four contests by more than 28 points this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Meanwhile, Peru won against Saranac Lake last Friday with 27 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Friday. The Nighthawks really took it to AuSable Valley for the full four quarters, racking up a 27-0 victory. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Nighthawks had established a 20-point advantage.
Saranac better focus on containing Brody Blaise-Smith and Jake Frechette as the pair were huge in Peru's win. Blaise-Smith rushed for 86 yards and two TDs on only eight carries, while Frechette threw for 140 yards and one touchdown. Blaise-Smith has been hot recently, having posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last four times he's played.
One reason for the win was Peru's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Layden Delaronde was especially locked on to AuSable Valley's QB and sacked him twice.
Saranac's record now sits at 5-2. As for Peru, their record is now 7-0.
