Baseball Game Preview: Progreso Red Ants vs. Lyford Bulldogs

Progreso is 0-9 against Lyford since March of 2021 but things could change on Saturday. The Red Ants are taking a road trip to challenge the Bulldogs at 11:00 a.m.

Progreso fell victim to Raymondville and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They lost 10-0 to the Bearkats. The match marked the first time this season in which the Red Ants were not able to get on the board.

Progreso saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was David Hernandez, who went 1-for-2 with one triple. That triple marked the first that Hernandez hit this season.

Meanwhile, Lyford never let their opponents score on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 15-0 margin over Santa Rosa. Considering the Bulldogs have won ten contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Diego Medina was incredible, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Josiah Palmer, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1.

Lyford was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .533. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.

The win made it two in a row for Lyford and bumps their season record up to 16-8. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Progreso, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-6.

Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Progreso has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .565. However, it's not like Lyford struggles in that department as they've averaged .432. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Progreso suffered a grim 18-0 defeat to Lyford in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Red Ants avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
