Football Recap: Marco Guereque Key Part of Team Effort in Longhorns Win

Payson won the last time they faced Show Low and things went their way on Friday too. The Longhorns walked away with a 35-25 win over the Cougars. Payson's victory was all the more impressive since the Cougars were averaging only 9.2 points allowed on the season.

Payson's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Marco Guereque, who picked up 187 receiving yards and two scores. Those 187 receiving yards gave Guereque a new career-high. Payson also got a significant boost from Nathan Tsosie, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 141 yards.

Payson was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 207 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Payson's defense and their five sacks. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Ethan Gurtner and Landon Parton, who each picked up 1.5 sacks apiece. Gurtner was another major factor on D, picking up 1.5 sacks, forcing one fumble, and making seven total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Despite the loss, Show Low still got an impressive performance from Jett Walker, who rushed for 96 yards and one touchdown on only five carries, and also picked up 71 receiving yards and one TD. Walker really tore up the turf during one magnificent 73-yard run. Another player making a difference was Kash Perkins, who rushed for 29 yards and a pair of scores.

Payson's record is now 7-3. As for Show Low, their defeat dropped their record down to an identical 7-3.

Payson didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 25-15 loss against Gilbert Christian on the 7th. As for Show Low, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 21-14 win against River Valley on the 7th.
