Softball Recap: Clovis Wildcats vs. Carlsbad Cavemen
Clovis extended their losing streak to seven on Tuesday, dropping them down to 3-13. They came up short against the Carlsbad Cavemen, falling 21-2. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cavemen this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 18-0 on Tuesday.
Clovis saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brooklynn Garza, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and two RBI.
As for Carlsbad, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-9. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On Carlsbad's side, Katrina Ortega was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Ortega has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Carlsbad got a massive performance out of Makayla Chester, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, two doubles, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Chester has posted since back in March. Addyson Vallejos was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one double.
We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Clovis will challenge rival Hobbs at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Carlsbad is set to square off against their familiar foe Roswell at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
