Softball Recap: Saint Gertrude Wins Going Away Against Collegiate

Saint Gertrude had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 15-run drubbing they dealt Collegiate on Tuesday. The Gators were the clear victors by a 19-4 margin over the Cougars. The win continues a trend for the Gators in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won three in a row.

Sophia Covington and Sophie Sims were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Covington pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Sims struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. At the plate, Covington went 3-for-5 with four RBI and one double, while Sims went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles. That's the most RBI Sims has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Campbell Kincaid was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ali Sprouse, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Saint Gertrude always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .605. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Collegiate only posted an OBP of .280.

The victory got Saint Gertrude back to even at 8-8. As for Collegiate, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-13.

Coming up, Saint Gertrude will square off against Christchurch School at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Collegiate, they will face off against St. Catherine's at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Saints have averaged an impressive 10.3 runs per game this season.
