Football Recap: Franklin Community Starts Season with Win Against Southport

Franklin Community gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They blew past the Southport Cardinals 38-0. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Grizzly Cubs just coasted through the last quarter.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Franklin Community to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cole Bowker, who picked up 38 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also punched in one rushing score. Greyson Betts was another key passer, throwing for 107 yards and three TDs while completing 83.3% of his passes.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Franklin Community proved: they limited Southport to a paltry 3.5 yards per carry. While two picked up at least ten total tackles, Blake Smythe stood above the rest. He picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made ten total tackles (3.0 for loss). Franklin Community's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.9.

Looking ahead, Franklin Community is headed away from home for the first time to face off against Mt. Vernon at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Southport, they will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on Perry Meridian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
