Bayfield takes loss despite strong efforts from Kingston Martinez and Lincoln Williams

Recap: Bayfield Wolverines vs. Shiprock Chieftains

The Bayfield Wolverines pushed their score all the way to 56 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 65-56 hit to the loss column at the hands of Shiprock. While losing is never fun, Bayfield can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 293rd in Colorado, while Shiprock is ranked 61st in New Mexico).

Lincoln Williams and Kingston Martinez certainly did their best on Tuesday to try and avoid the loss. Williams scored seven points along with eight assists and seven steals, while Martinez scored 16 points along with seven rebounds. That's the first time this season that Williams posted eight or more assists. Another player making a difference was Cooper Rodrick, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds.

Bayfield's loss dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Shiprock, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 7-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Bayfield will challenge Montezuma-Cortez at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Montezuma-Cortez is coming into the game on a four-game losing streak. As for Shiprock, they will head out on the road to face off against Hope Christian at 10:30 a.m. on January 18th.
