Baseball Game Preview: Irvington Vikings vs. Moreau Catholic Mariners

The Irvington Vikings will head out to take on the Moreau Catholic Mariners at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Last Friday, Irvington had just enough and edged out Kennedy 3-1.

Giovanni Pena tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over 5.2 innings pitched. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March.

On the hitting side, Irvington saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Wesley Ren, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

Meanwhile, Moreau Catholic had already won two in a row and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Pride with a sharp 15-0 win. The Mariners not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since March 7th.

The team relied heavily on Isaiah Broadus, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton Leytam, who scored three runs while going 1-for-3.

Moreau Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Salesian College Preparatory only posted an OBP of .235.

Irvington has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Moreau Catholic, their record now sits at 6-7.

Irvington came out on top in a nail-biter against Moreau Catholic when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 8-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
