Basketball Recap: SIUE East St. Louis Charter Takes a Loss

SIUE East St. Louis Charter lost against Southwestern back in December of 2023 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The SIUE East St. Louis Charter Cougars fell 48-36 to the Southwestern Piasa Birds. The game marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

When it comes to explaining why SIUE East St. Louis Charter lost, don't look at Kejuan Rives. Despite the final result, he went 9 for 21 on his way to 19 points and three steals. The contest was Rives' ninth in a row with at least ten points. Travis Harrell was another key player, putting up seven points.

Southwestern got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ryan Lowis out in front who posted 15 points and eight rebounds. Lowis has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Cason Robinson, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 14 points.

SIUE East St. Louis Charter has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season. As for Southwestern, they now have a winning record of 9-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. SIUE East St. Louis Charter will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Riverview Gardens at 5:30 p.m. on January 9, 2025. Southwestern will also get a bit of a break before their next game: they'll face off against Bunker Hill at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
