Ohio junior quarterback Maty Mauk comes up big in playoff loss; South Carolina's Justin Worley moves on.
The spectacular junior season for Maty Mauk of Kenton (Ohio) has come to an end after a 35-32 loss to Archbishop Alter (Kettering, Ohio) in the Ohio Division IV playoffs, but not without another huge performance by the Wildcat quarterback.

Mauk completed 28 of 45 passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns in the loss, giving him a national best 5,670 yards and 69 touchdowns on the season.
Heading into his senior season, Mauk will be poised to make a run at the national passing records established by his brother Ben nearly 10 years ago. Based on stats reported to MaxPreps, Mauk enters his senior season with 13,519 career yards (sixth best all-time), with 971 completions (fifth best), 1,544 attempts (sixth best) and 151 touchdowns (sixth best).
National records in those categories are 17,364 yards (Ben Mauk, Kenton, Ohio); 1,103 completions (J.R. House, Nitro, W.V.), 1,905 attempts (Ben Mauk), and 185 touchdowns (Chris Leak, Independence, N.C.).
Maty Mauk's 5,670 yards passing this year also ranks fourth best all-time according to the National Federation High School Record Book and his 69 touchdowns also ranks fourth all-time for a single season.
Mauk will likely finish as the national season leader, but Justin Worley of Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.) still has a shot to overtake the Kenton junior. Worley has 4,788 yards on the season after throwing for 349 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-35 quarterfinal playoff win over Ashley Ridge (Summerville, S.C.).
Worley would have to average 441 yards in his final two games (assuming Northwestern defeats Goose Creek this week and reaches the state finals), which is not out of the question. Worley has thrown for more than 441 yards twice this season, but he is averaging 368 yards per outing.
One of the top performances of the week came from John Robertson of Paramus (N.J.). Besides throwing for 330 yards and a touchdown in a 63-56 loss to Northern Valley (Old Tappan, N.J.), Robertson also carried 31 times for 278 yards and seven touchdowns. The game also featured an exceptional rushing performance by Northern Valley's Devin Fuller, whose 406 yards rushing with six touchdowns was the highest rushing total reported to MaxPreps this week.
