Basketball Game Preview: Point Loma Pointers vs. Tri-City Christian Eagles

Two dominant guards in Grant Stewart and Jeramiah Turner are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Point Loma Pointers will square off against the Tri-City Christian Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Friday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Point Loma beat Coronado 67-63. Given the Pointers' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 293rd, while the Islanders are ranked 617th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Tri-City Christian narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Escondido Charter 50-48. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.

Point Loma better keep an eye on Turner. He was instrumental in Tri-City Christian's win, going 8 for 17 on his way to 16 points along with five blocks and three steals. Those five blocks gave Turner a new career-high. Joel Valverde was another key player, putting up nine points and eight boards.

Tri-City Christian is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.7 points per game. As for Point Loma, their record is now 17-4.

Point Loma didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Tri-City Christian in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, but they still walked away with a 55-50 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Point Loma since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
