Basketball Preview: Regina Dominican Panthers vs. Woodlands Academy Wildcats
Regina Dominican is 4-0 against the Wildcats since December of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. The Regina Dominican Panthers will head out on the road to challenge the Woodlands Academy Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. Hopefully Regina Dominican focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Friday.
Last Friday, Regina Dominican strolled past the Hawks with points to spare, taking the game 38-21. Given Regina Dominican's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 181st, while the Hawks are ranked 511th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Regina Dominican found their leader in underclassman Natalia Cerrado, who scored 13 points. Grace Byrne was another key contributor, scoring five points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Woodlands Academy ended up a good deal behind the Knights on Friday and lost 43-27. Woodlands Academy has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite the loss, Woodlands Academy saw an underclassman step up: Lucy Petherbridge scored six points along with six rebounds.
Regina Dominican has been performing well recently as they've won 13 of their last 16 games, which provided a nice bump to their 19-8 record this season. As for Woodlands Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-12.
Keep an eye on the arc in Monday's matchup: Regina Dominican have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 37.4% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Woodlands Academy, though, as they've only made 28.2% of their threes this season. Given Regina Dominican's sizable advantage in that area, the Wildcats will need to find a way to close that gap.
Regina Dominican took their win against the Wildcats in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 by a conclusive 47-23. The rematch might be a little tougher for Regina Dominican since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
