Football Game Preview: Monett Cubs vs. Mt. Vernon Mountaineers

The Monett Cubs will venture away from home to square off against the Mt. Vernon Mountaineers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Monett has given up an average of 35.2 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

The home team had come away the winner the last four times Monett and Cassville had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Cubs fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 48-46 on Friday. The Cubs haven't had much luck with the Wildcats recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Monett might have lost, but man, Dylan Washick was a machine: he threw for 430 yards and six touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes. Washick's passing game has become a key predictor of the Cubs' success: the team is 3-1 when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 1-3 otherwise. Carson Nestleroad was Washick's top target, picking up 154 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon gave up the first points on Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They secured a 28-24 W over Nevada. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mountaineers.

Monett's defeat dropped their record down to 4-4. As for Mt. Vernon, the victory also got them back to even at 4-4.

Monett beat Mt. Vernon 56-48 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Do the Cubs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mountaineers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
