Softball Recap: Normal University Gets the Win

Normal University came out on top against Lexington on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run second inning. The Pioneers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-7 win over the Minutemen. The victory continues a trend for the Pioneers in their matchups with the Minutemen: they've now won four in a row.

Normal University got a great performance from Makenzie Post as she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts Post has posted over her last 14 contests.

At the plate, Emmerson Steward was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last 14 matchups. Another player making a difference was Lola Phillips, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.

Normal University's record is now 9-10. As for Lexington, their loss dropped their record down to 10-9.

Normal University and Lexington could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Pioneers (ranked 208th) will meet East Peoria (ranked 52nd) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Lexington will take on Tri-Valley at 4:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (253 vs. 114).
