After taking the lead on a rushing touchdown, the Rams went into halftime with a 14-8 lead. The Orphans took the lead for good with a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring 16 points in the third, Centralia still trailed by 4 points going into the fourth quarter. But 19 points in the fourth helped CHS pull out the victory.
Josh Brinson made a difference for Mt. Vernon. The senior running back ran for one touchdown.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 59-48 win for the Orphans.
In a non-conference game next week Mt. Vernon (0-8) takes on Mt. Carmel, and Centralia (8-0) will go up against Mascoutah also in a non-conference game.
