Baseball Recap: Marlboro Comes Up Short

Marlboro had lost five straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 2-10 to make it six. They fell just short of the Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs by a score of 4-2. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2016.

As for Rumson-Fair Haven, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-6-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.

For Rumson-Fair Haven's part, Cooper Jones looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Jones also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Bulldogs are undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-6-1 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Miles Martin, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Parker Shenman also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.

Looking ahead, Marlboro will head out on the road to square off against Christian Brothers Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Colts' pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so the Mustangs' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Rumson-Fair Haven, they will be playing at home against Caldwell at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
