Baseball Game Preview: Brookland-Cayce Bearcats vs. Chapin Eagles

The Brookland-Cayce Bearcats are taking a road trip to take on the Chapin Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The last three games Brookland-Cayce has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

On Thursday, Brookland-Cayce had just enough and edged out Gray Collegiate Academy 5-4. That's two games straight that the Bearcats have won by just one run.

Preston Coggins spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on five hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Brookland-Cayce is 3-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 4-6 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Rylan Bullis, who scored a run while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Paiden Mergo also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, Chapin faced River Bluff in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Eagles fell just short of the Gators by a score of 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Eagles have suffered since April 5, 2024.

Chapin also got a good showing from Cooper Derrick, who tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Derrick has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.

Chapin's loss dropped their record down to 8-5. As for Brookland-Cayce, the victory got them back to even at 7-7.

Brookland-Cayce came up short against Chapin when the teams last played back in March of 2024, falling 7-2. Can the Bearcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
