Basketball Recap: Caldwell Takes a Loss

Caldwell was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their eighth straight defeat. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 43-42 heartbreaker at the hands of the Frontier Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Redskins can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 569th, while the Cougars are ranked 257th).

Laynie Sidwell and Breighlee Moracco certainly did their best on Monday to avoid the loss. Sidwell posted 13 points, while Moracco put up four points and three steals. Moracco is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lexi Franklin, who earned eight points.

Even though they lost, Caldwell smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Frontier only pulled down one offensive board.

Frontier's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kelsey Dye, who went 5 of 8 on her way to 13 points. Willow Smitley was another key player, putting up ten points and five boards.

Caldwell's loss dropped their record down to 3-10. As for Frontier, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-2 record this season.

Caldwell didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 50-45 defeat against Monroe Central on the 15th. As for Frontier, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 59-22 victory against Bridgeport on the 15th.
