Baseball Recap: Cherokee Picks Up 15th Straight Win on the Road

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cherokee). Everything went their way against the Moorestown Quakers on Thursday as they made off with a 13-5 win. The Chiefs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 matchups by seven runs or more this season.

Jason Handfield looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had over his last three games.

On the hitting side, Cherokee got a massive performance out of Mason Kelleher, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most runs Kelleher has posted over his last nine contests. The team also got some help courtesy of Steven Barbagiovanni, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Cherokee kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in ten consecutive matches.

Cherokee pushed their record up to 19-0 with the victory, which was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Moorestown, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-7 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cherokee will square off against Gloucester Catholic at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Chiefs 1.8, the Rams 1.7) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Moorestown, they will face off against Cinnaminson at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
