Softball Recap: South Eugene Axe vs. Grants Pass Cavemen
South Eugene had lost seven straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped down to 3-17 to make it eight. They lost 14-1 to the Grants Pass Cavemen. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Cavemen this season, with their most recent loss being a 10-0 defeat on Saturday.
As for Grants Pass, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by six runs or more this season.
For Grants Pass' part, Brooklyn Kuykendall made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over four innings pitched. Kuykendall has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Cadence Morales was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sabian Provolt, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs.
Looking ahead, South Eugene will challenge Sheldon at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Grants Pass, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Willamette at 4:30 p.m. The Wolverines have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.04 runs per game on average), something the Cavemen will no doubt try to take advantage of.
