Softball Preview: Oxford Academy Patriots vs. Portola Bulldogs
Oxford Academy is a perfect 3-0 against Portola since March of 2023 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Oxford Academy Patriots will venture away from home to challenge the Portola Bulldogs at 3:15 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Oxford Academy will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs last Tuesday, then bounced right back against Samueli Academy on Wednesday. Oxford Academy never let Samueli Academy get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Patriots in their matchups with the Firewolves: they've now won four in a row.
Mia Sierra was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. In other batting news, Shay Tiettmeyer was incredible, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Xiomara Martinez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one double.
Oxford Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .531. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Samueli Academy only posted an OBP of .105.
Meanwhile, Portola won against Saddleback last Tuesday with 18 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Monday. Portola was the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over Orange. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Bulldogs.
Oxford Academy's record is now 10-2. As for Portola, their record is now 4-2-1.
Oxford Academy took their victory against Portola in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 21-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for Oxford Academy since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
