Basketball Recap: Mt. Vernon Marauders vs. Yorktown Tigers
Mt. Vernon proved they can win big last Tuesday (they won by 29) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 47-44 victory over the Yorktown Tigers. For the Marauders, this counts as revenge for the 41-39 win the Tigers walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2023.
Mt. Vernon got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Zoey Wood out in front who posted 16 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. That makes it three consecutive games in which Wood has scored at least a third of Mt. Vernon's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Delani Williams, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 15 points and four steals.
Yorktown lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Olivia Conklin, who went 6 of 8 on her way to 15 points. Conklin has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Alexis Fields was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 13 boards.
Mt. Vernon is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. As for Yorktown, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-4.
Mt. Vernon wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 55-41 win against New Palestine on the 17th. As for Yorktown, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 59-41 victory against Mississinewa on the 18th.
