Football Recap: Cherokee Bluff Starts Season with Win Against Lumpkin County

Cherokee Bluff had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top against the Lumpkin County Indians by a score of 31-21. The Bears haven't had any issues with the Indians recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.

Leading Cherokee Bluff to victory were Malcolm Millsap and Tony Rushin. Millsap gained 178 total yards and two touchdowns, while Rushin rushed for 56 yards and two TDs.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Cherokee Bluff was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 239 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lumpkin County only rushed for 135 rushing yards.

Despite the defeat, Lumpkin County had strong showings from Nolan Matthews, who rushed for 135 yards and one score, and Martin Hulsey, who picked up 108 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. Matthews' rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his fourth straight game with at least 121 rushing yards dating back to last season.

Looking ahead, Cherokee Bluff will look to defend their home field on Friday against Apalachee at 7:30 p.m. As for Lumpkin County, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Hart County at 7:30 p.m. on the 29th.
