Basketball Recap: Morningside Academy Eagles vs. Martin County Tigers
After flying high against Varsity Opponent last Friday, the Morningside Academy Eagles came back down to earth. Morningside Academy was beaten by the Tigers 60-29 on Tuesday. Morningside Academy was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 38-16.
Morningside Academy's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Giuliana Bonasera, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Emmilina Miller who scored nine points. Bonasera hasn't dropped below nine rebounds for 17 straight games. Arianna Wallace was another key contributor, scoring four points along with five rebounds.
Martin County got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Becca Witt out in front who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Cameron Slate, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Morningside Academy's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-5. As for Martin County, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 14-7.
Morningside Academy will square off against the Pirates at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Martin County, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on January 31st. Westwood is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
