Baseball Recap: Kemper Academy Has No Trouble Against Newton County Academy

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Noxapater, Kemper Academy was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. They came out on top against the Newton County Academy Generals by a score of 8-4. That four run margin sets a new team best for the Rams this season.

Cooper Thornton made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Thornton was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Davis Cumberland, who fired off two home runs and five RBI while going 3-for-4. What's more, he posted two runs, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Hayes McDade, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

Kemper Academy's win bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Newton County Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-9.

Looking ahead, Newton County Academy will square off against Prentiss Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Saints have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.75 runs per game on average), something the Generals will no doubt try to take advantage of. Kemper Academy will be paying especially close attention to Newton County Academy's game: after Newton County Academy faces off against Grace Christian, they'll take on Kemper Academy again at 7:00 p.m. on the 15th.
