The Doral Academy Firebirds will be taking part in a tournament against the Eau Gallie Commodores at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Doral Academy will come into the contest with an undefeated record on the line.
Doral Academy's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They blew past St. Brendan 13-0. The result was nothing new for the Firebirds, who have now won 14 games by six runs or more so far this season.
Meagan Villazon made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Sarah Breaux was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Ashley Tremont also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Doral Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. Brendan only posted an OBP of .176.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Eau Gallie). They put the hurt on Palm Bay with a sharp 27-0 victory on Wednesday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Commodores with their most commanding win of the season.
Like Doral Academy, Eau Gallie also got a great game from a two-way player: Evie Martin. She struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Martin was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Mary Winans was a standout: she got on base in all five of her plate appearances with four runs, three RBI, and one triple. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Hannah Leech was another key player, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one double.
Doral Academy pushed their record up to 15-0 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.1 runs on average over those games. As for Eau Gallie, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-3.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Doral Academy hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Eau Gallie struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
