Football Game Preview: Spruce Mountain Phoenix vs. Stearns Minutemen

The Spruce Mountain Phoenix will challenge the Stearns Minutemen at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Spruce Mountain is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Cape Elizabeth, who was ranked 12th at the time (Spruce Mountain was ranked fifth). The Phoenix blew past the Capers, posting a 62-6 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Phoenix.

Spruce Mountain got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Owen Kelvey out in front who rushed for 93 yards and five touchdowns on only 12 carries. Thanks to that big game, Kelvey is now up to 7 rushing touchdowns on the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Dylan Jewett, who rushed for 135 yards on only five carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Spruce Mountain was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 375 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in ten consecutive games dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Stearns humbled Ellsworth with a 56-12 victory.

Spruce Mountain's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Stearns, their win bumped their record up to 5-1.
