Baseball Recap: South Kingstown Has No Trouble Against Westerly

South Kingstown had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the nine-run drubbing they dealt Westerly on Monday. The Rebels put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 9-0 win. The Rebels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by six runs or more this season.

Jonah Monnes made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over seven innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Nick Vellone and Michael DiGioia did most of the damage at the plate: Vellone got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while DiGioia went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Jordan Chaloux, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.

South Kingstown's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-3. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Westerly, they moved to 13-5 with that defeat, which also ended their ten-game winning streak.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. South Kingstown will challenge rival Barrington at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Westerly is set to take on their familiar foe Smithfield at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Bulldogs 3.2, the Sentinels 3.3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
