Basketball Recap: Gilbert Christian's Winning Streak Snapped at Seven Games

If Gilbert Christian was feeling good fresh off their 58-13 takedown of Scottsdale Christian Academy last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Gilbert Christian Knights fell 45-32 to the Payson Longhorns on Saturday. The Knights' defeat signaled the end of their seven-game winning streak.

When it comes to explaining why Gilbert Christian lost, don't look at Kaila Aston. Despite the final result, she posted ten points in addition to five boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Gilbert Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in eight consecutive contests.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Payson to victory, but perhaps none more so than Hannah Sarnowski, who earned 11 points and eight rebounds. Grace DeSchaaf was another key player, dropping a double-double on 16 points and ten boards.

Gilbert Christian's loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-6. As for Payson, they pushed their record up to 19-4 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road.

Gilbert Christian and Payson should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings. Gilbert Christian will face off against Apache Junction at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday up 155 places (89 vs. 244). Similarly, Payson (ranked 54th) will meet San Tan Foothills (ranked 207th) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
