Preview: Herington Railroaders vs. Solomon Gorillas
Herington is 1-9 against Solomon since February of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Herington Railroaders will head out on the road to square off against the Solomon Gorillas at 7:30 p.m. Herington will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Kansas Rankings (they are ranked 287th, while Solomon is ranked 137th).
Last Friday, Herington was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 50-45 to Goessel. Herington has not had much luck with Goessel recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.
Despite the loss, Herington got a solid performance out of Mason Mortensen, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. That was a full 48.9% of Herington's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyus Becker, who scored nine points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Meanwhile, Solomon came tearing into Friday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 25.5 points) and they left with even more momentum. They blew past Wakefield 67-12 at home. Solomon has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight contests by 21 points or more this season.
Herington's loss dropped their record down to 7-10. As for Solomon, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-6.
Herington came up short against Solomon in their previous meeting back in January, falling 53-44. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Solomon's Spencer Coup, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and 13 rebounds. Now that Herington knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
